If your tape won’t stick there could be one or several factors at play. These are the most common causes to troubleshoot:

  1. Surface is not clean:
    • If the surface where you’re applying the tape is dirty or has a film or residue (for example, dust or pollen in the air can cause a light coating over an outdoor surface), the adhesive may not make proper contact with the substrate it is being applied to. Before applying your tape, always make sure that the surface is clean and free of dust, oils, or any other contaminants.
  2. Your adhesive is old or has expired:
    • If the surface is clean and your take won’t stick, check the expiration date on the tape. Adhesives inevitably lose their effectiveness over time, especially if they have exceeded their shelf life. If your tape is expired or is old, replace it to ensure a proper adhesion to the surface to which you’re applying it.
  3. Moisture on the surface:
    • Your tape won’t stick if there is moisture on the substrate of application. Moisture can interfere with the adhesive’s ability to bond, which will lead to your tape refusing to adhere to the substrate or losing its stickiness shortly after application. Always make sure the application surface is completely dry before applying the tape. If working in humid conditions, consider using tapes designed for moisture resistance.
  4. Tape was not stored properly:
    • Improper storage conditions, such as exposure to extreme temperatures or high humidity, can affect the adhesive properties of the material and when it is time to apply, your take won’t stick or will not adhere completely. Always store your tapes in a cool, dry place according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  5. Substrate temperature too cold:
    • Some adhesives require a minimum temperature to fully activate the adhesive for optimal bonding. If the substrate is too cold, the adhesive may not activate properly. Ensure that the substrate is within the recommended temperature range specified by the tape manufacturer.

By addressing these potential issues, you can improve the chances of your tape adhering successfully to the desired surface. Check out all of our troubleshooting tips and frequently asked questions for more assistance, and follow us on LinkedIn for more helpful tips, product information, and news.
